WEEKLY TOP ELECTRONIC CHARTS: JANUARY 2012, VOL. 34

11 Jan

As we march into the deep winter, electro house flexes its muscles as it starts to tighten up its vice grip on the EDM movement. The young prince of Germany, Zedd, tops the charts with some block rockin’ beats. Nicky Romero shows us he means business with some dirty dutch. Ummet Ozcan shows the world that trance is evolving like a “Cocoon”.

1. ZEDD “SLAM THE DOOR” [ORIGINAL MIX] (OWSLA)

Release Date: 2012-01-03

Zedd does a solo act this time with the release of his new electro house hit “Slam The Door”. That’s right, no Skrillex or Porter Robinson accompanying this track. The young German shows his innovation with this track by integrating humorous modulated vocals and fast paced beats.

Even though this track is thrown into the electro house genre, it is important to note that “Slam The Door” is much more complex. It significantly draws on elements of progressive house and dubstep.

It was only about a year ago that Zedd was in the process of dropping his massive single “Dovregubben” themed after the famous symphonic composition “In The Hall of the Mountain King” by Edvard Grieg. He is an artist to watch crawl up the DJMag charts in 2012.

2. NICKY ROMERO “TOULOUSE” [ORIGINAL MIX] (SPINNIN RECORDS)

Release Date: 2011-12-19

Young Dutch sensation Nicky Romero is having a phenomenal past 12 months. With huge hits like “Camorra” and “Beta” and a couple massive remixes with David Guetta, Romero is doing some serious work.

“Toulouse” is interesting; both in definition and style. First off, for those wondering, the term Toulouse is the name of a famed French painter. Maybe this is in correlation in style to the track. Romero integrates progressive build up with some massive drops.

Look out for Romero in 2012. Outside of his singles and remixes, Romero has been noted for outstanding live performances at places like Washington D.C.’s “Glow” and Denver’s “Beta”.

3. UMMET OZCAN “COCOON” [ORIGINAL MIX] (RESET RECORDS)

Release Date: 2012-01-02

Another Dutch DJ gets his name on this week’s charts. Ummet Ozcan shows us the evolution of trance with his newly released single “Cocoon”.

Originally making its debut on Armin van Buuren’s “A State of Trance”, this track has a lot to live up to. “Cocoon” possesses trance beginnings with smooth progressive house transitions.

Ozcan will keep making a name for himself. He’s surrounded by the right label and the right artists to continue to grow as a DJ.

4. JOE GARSTON “THE PROMISE” [ORIGINAL MIX] (PLASMAPOOL)

Release Date: 2011-01-02

Plasmapool hits the charts for another week, but this time with one its newer artists Joe Garston. At only 19, he can say that he has already hit the top 10 on Beatport with his rising single “The Promise”.

The vibe to the track is uplifting. Funky synths blend in with a melodic elements. The track still has that “Plasmapool” feel to it, as it truly is electro house based.

The track probably wont ever be a huge festival hit; however it deserves credit for uniqueness and going against the grain. At the very least, it is a slick production.

5. GENIX, MIKE KOGLIN “DYNO” [ORIGINAL MIX] (ANJUNABEATS)

Release Date: 2011-12-19

Guess what? Yes, Anjunabeats just released another huge single with Genix and Mike Koglin. There seems to be no stop with this music label, fueled by prodigious talent and keen attention to detail.

This track, interestingly enough, was produced together by both artists, however they apparently never were in the same room together. This is impressive considering the fact this trance track relies heavily on melody to help make it flow.

Having already been featured on “Trance Around the World” with Above & Beyond, there is no denying its legitimacy. This is a must have track for EDM fans.
